中(zhong)(zhong)岳(yue)(yue)大(da)(da)帝(di)(di)(di),道教(jiao)尊為“中(zhong)(zhong)天(tian)(tian)大(da)(da)圣(sheng)崇(chong)圣(sheng)帝(di)(di)(di)”、“大(da)(da)寧崇(chong)圣(sheng)上(shang)帝(di)(di)(di)”、“太虛浩蕩司算真(zhen)君(jun)”、“黃(huang)天(tian)(tian)中(zhong)(zhong)主天(tian)(tian)尊”等,居大(da)(da)光天(tian)(tian)宮、中(zhong)(zhong)岳(yue)(yue)嵩陽宮。與(yu)東岳(yue)(yue)天(tian)(tian)齊大(da)(da)生仁(ren)圣(sheng)帝(di)(di)(di),南岳(yue)(yue)司天(tian)(tian)大(da)(da)化昭圣(sheng)帝(di)(di)(di),西岳(yue)(yue)金天(tian)(tian)大(da)(da)利順圣(sheng)帝(di)(di)(di),北(bei)岳(yue)(yue)安天(tian)(tian)大(da)(da)貞立圣(sheng)帝(di)(di)(di)合稱五岳(yue)(yue)大(da)(da)帝(di)(di)(di)。中(zhong)(zhong)岳(yue)(yue)大(da)(da)帝(di)(di)(di)名(ming)惲(yun)善,五行中(zhong)(zhong)屬土,為黃(huang)色(se),因此中(zhong)(zhong)岳(yue)(yue)大(da)(da)帝(di)(di)(di)一身黃(huang)色(se):服黃(huang)素之袍,戴黃(huang)玉太乙之冠(guan),佩(pei)神(shen)宗陽和(he)之印,乘黃(huang)龍,統領仙官玉女三萬人(ren)。
據《舊唐書·禮儀志四》記載,武則天垂拱四年(688年),雍卅永安人唐同泰偽造瑞石于洛水,獻給武則天。其文曰:圣母臨人,永昌帝業。武則天加封洛水之神,又因為嵩山和洛水相距很近,又封嵩山為神岳,封嵩山山神為中天王,在五岳中率先得到帝王封祀,中岳大帝是五岳中信仰起源最早的神。
五岳大帝是指東岳大帝、南岳大帝、西岳大帝、北岳大帝、中岳大帝。
主治土地山川陵谷,山林樹木之屬,兼管牛羊稻谷等。按(an)五(wu)(wu)行觀念,中(zhong)(zhong)央屬土(tu),故道(dao)教認為中(zhong)(zhong)岳為五(wu)(wu)土(tu)之主,強調太上常用(yong)三(san)天真人有德望者居中(zhong)(zhong)岳神君之位。
